The Monkey Who Became King of Humans
Synopsis
After ten years of experiments, Professor Gerasim creates a device that enables Vule the monkey to speak. But the scientific triumph soon becomes a political spectacle: a disillusioned people recognise a saviour in Vule and choose him as king. Promises of freedom and equality turn into absurd decrees, surveillance and fear. When Vladimir leads a revolt against him, the question arises whether replacing the ruler really changes the system. This ‘play of foolery’ draws the audience into a story about populism, obedience and the responsibility of those who surrender their own power.
Longlisted for the Aurora Award 2026, Poland.
Excerpt — Scene Three: The First Decrees
VULE
(into the microphone, authoritatively)
DECREE NUMBER ONE!
From today on, all streets will be called:
“MONKEY STREET”!
(pause for effect)
DECREE NUMBER TWO!
All citizens must walk
the way I walk –
Or not walk at all!
DECREE NUMBER THREE!
Criticizing the king
in public places is forbidden!
PEOPLE + AUDIENCE
(shock, disbelief)
What? Why?
That’s not what you promised!
This is madness!
CHORUS
(darkly)
But who will oppose him?
Who has the courage?
Who has the strength?
The monkey pulls the strings…
(Several ADVISORS emerge from the chorus – they wear small monkey tails as symbols.)
ADVISOR 1
(nervously)
Your Majesty…
Perhaps the streets should have numbers?
For mail… for navigation…
VULE
(angrily)
No! I don’t like numbers!
Numbers are confusing!
All except… except zeros!
(gets excited)
I love zeros!
Lots of zeros!
When I look at bank statements
I want to see lots of zeros
after the first digit!
